Stepping is a combination of African and African-American music and dance traditions. A school step team puts on performances that involve drill-team moves, cheerleading, gymnastics and acrobatics. Stepping always involves clapping and stomping, sometimes simultaneously, and allows steppers to use their bodies to create rhythms. Starting a school step team requires not only stepping skills but also strong organizational and marketing skills. Talk with friends at your school and see who might be interested in getting involved in a step team. Keep a list of these friends.
If she moved even slightly off tempo from her fellow steppers, she could throw off the whole beat. Her team, the Royal Duchess, may have only been practicing that Thursday afternoon, but they had a show coming up and for Quillens, 17, every performance counts. Stepping, a dance form more commonly associated with black fraternities and sororities, has evolved in the last two decades to incorporate more youth teams including hundreds in Houston and across Texas. Whether in school-sponsored teams at the elementary, middle school and high school level, or in community-based teams like the Royal Duchess, young steppers carry on a distinctly African-American cultural tradition that now includes competitive ranking on the regional and national stage. Texas will even host youth nationals next year in Dallas-Fort Worth bringing together the top step teams from across the United States onto one stage. There are various judging categories for stepping performances.
